LAC vs LoC vs International Boundary
Key Distinctions
News on India-China border management frequently uses terms that UPSC tests for precise distinction from India's other contested boundaries.
- LAC (Line of Actual Control): the notional line separating Indian and Chinese-held territory; not mutually delimited or demarcated on ground or maps, unlike a settled international boundary — this is why "boundary delimitation" remains an active agenda item in WMCC talks
- LoC (Line of Control): separates Indian and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, established by the 1972 Shimla Agreement, more clearly defined than the LAC
- International Boundary (IB): the settled, mutually recognised boundary (e.g., India-Bangladesh boundary after the 2015 Land Boundary Agreement/100th Constitutional Amendment)
- India and China do not agree even on the LAC's precise alignment, with divergent perceptions in sectors like Depsang, Demchok (recently disengaged, 2024), and Doklam (India-China-Bhutan tri-junction area)
