From NEFA to Statehood
Arunachal Pradesh's administrative and constitutional evolution reflects its strategic sensitivity: from a frontier tract under central control to full statehood, it has always been treated as a critical borderland requiring direct central oversight before political integration.
- The North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) was constituted in 1954, administered directly by the Ministry of External Affairs given its border sensitivity.
- NEFA was renamed Arunachal Pradesh and made a Union Territory in 1972; it attained full statehood on 20 February 1987 under the State of Arunachal Pradesh Act, 1986, becoming India's 24th state.
- The state's Legislative Assembly strength was raised from 30 to 60 seats at the time of statehood.
