India's National Security Advisor arrived in Beijing to hold the 25th round of talks under the India-China Special Representatives (SR) mechanism on the boundary question, with the Chinese Special Representative — who is also China's Foreign Minister and a member of the Communist Party's Politburo.
The talks, scheduled for August 25, are expected to cover the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), border management and de-escalation measures, and the broader trajectory of bilateral relations.
The round takes place ahead of the Chinese President's expected visit to India for the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, scheduled for September 12–13, 2026, raising the possibility of high-level bilateral engagement on the summit's sidelines.
The Special Representatives (SR) Mechanism on the India-China Boundary Question
The SR mechanism is a political-level channel for negotiating a framework settlement of the India-China boundary dispute, distinct from military and diplomatic-level border talks. It was established following the June 2003 Declaration on Principles for Relations and Comprehensive Cooperation between India and China, signed during the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Beijing.

The LAC is not mutually delineated on maps or the ground, which is a root cause of recurring border friction.
