NTPC Seeks Overseas Buyers for Green Ammonia from Its Andhra Pradesh Hydrogen Hub

What happened
01

NTPC, India's largest power producer, said it is in talks with possible buyers in Japan, South Korea and Germany to export green fuels, mainly green ammonia, made at its upcoming green hydrogen hub.

02

The hub is being built by NTPC Green Energy Ltd at Pudimadaka, near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, on about 1,200 acres. Its foundation stone was laid on 8 January 2025. It is planned to make green hydrogen and its products, such as green ammonia and green methanol, mainly for export.

03

NTPC's Chairman and Managing Director said, at an Indian Chamber of Commerce event on 13 October 2026, that green hydrogen can become a viable business, but the priority is to move from pilot projects to commercial scale.

04

No binding export contract has been announced yet. Green ammonia and green methanol are preferred for trade because they are much easier to ship than pure hydrogen.

Green Ammonia

Green ammonia is ammonia (NH3) made using green hydrogen, which is hydrogen produced by splitting water with electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind. Normal ammonia is made using hydrogen taken from natural gas or coal, which releases a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2). Green ammonia is the same chemical, but made with almost no CO2. It can be used as a fertiliser raw material, as a clean fuel, and as a convenient way to carry hydrogen across the world.

Connection to this news

NTPC is trying to sell green ammonia, not pure hydrogen, to buyers in Japan, South Korea and Germany. Ammonia is far easier to ship and these countries want it for power plants, industry and fertilisers. Signing firm offtake agreements is the step that would move the Pudimadaka hub from plans to commercial scale.

National Green Hydrogen Mission (2023)

The National Green Hydrogen Mission is the Government of India's main programme to make India a global hub for producing, using and exporting green hydrogen and its products, such as green ammonia. It is run by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Its main support tool is the SIGHT programme, which gives incentives for making electrolysers and producing green hydrogen.

Connection to this news

The mission wants India not only to use green hydrogen at home but also to export it. NTPC's talks with foreign buyers for green ammonia from its Andhra Pradesh hub are a direct step towards this export goal.
