ESA to explore cooperation with ISRO in human space flight, lunar and Venus missions
The European Space Agency (ESA) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) held discussions in Paris on expanding cooperation in human spaceflight, lunar exploration, and interplanetary missions, including India's Venus Orbiter Mission.
The talks took place around the International Space Summit, with ISRO's Chairperson participating in discussions with ESA leadership.
Areas identified for potential collaboration include payload alignment and robotic scientific missions to the Moon, and coordination between India's Venus Orbiter Mission and ESA's own interplanetary programmes so the missions complement rather than duplicate each other.
The two agencies also discussed interoperability of rendezvous and docking systems, to allow future Indian and European spacecraft to operate together in low Earth orbit.
This builds on an existing agreement signed in December 2024, under which ESA provides ground station tracking support for ISRO's Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme.
Gaganyaan Programme
Gaganyaan is India's first indigenous human spaceflight programme, aiming to demonstrate India's capability to send humans to low Earth orbit and return them safely. It comprises two uncrewed test missions followed by a crewed mission, with international cooperation supporting ground tracking and astronaut training.
The Paris talks build directly on the December 2024 ground-support agreement, extending ESA-ISRO cooperation from tracking support into deeper collaboration on human spaceflight operations, astronaut-related activities, and future orbital rendezvous/docking interoperability.
India's Interplanetary Missions and Venus Orbiter Mission
Beyond Earth-orbit and lunar missions, ISRO has undertaken interplanetary missions such as the Mars Orbiter Mission (2013) and is developing the Venus Orbiter Mission (Shukrayaan) to study Venus's atmosphere, surface, and subsurface. International cooperation on payloads and mission design helps optimize scientific returns and avoid duplication with other agencies' missions to the same body.
