India's space sector is governed by a layered institutional structure formalised under the Indian Space Policy 2023, which opened the sector to private participation while retaining a clear division of roles among government bodies.
- Indian Space Policy 2023 was approved by the Union Cabinet on April 6, 2023
- Department of Space (DoS) sets overall policy and coordinates international cooperation
- ISRO focuses on research, development and operationalising new space technologies and systems
- IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) is the single-window body authorising and promoting private/non-government space activities
- NSIL (New Space India Limited), a public sector undertaking, commercialises ISRO-developed technologies and manages production and marketing of space products
