Commerce Minister's US Visit: G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting and India-US Trade Deal Talks

What happened
01

The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry will visit the United States from 29 September to 5 October 2026.

02

He will attend the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 30 September and 1 October 2026, at the invitation of the US Trade Representative (USTR). The US holds the G20 presidency in 2026.

03

He will also hold talks with the USTR to move forward the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and finalise an interim deal, in line with the Joint Statement of 7 February 2026.

04

Under the February framework, India said it would buy $500 billion worth of US energy products, aircraft and parts, precious metals, technology products and coking coal over five years.

05

At the G20 meeting, India will push for a rules-based, open, inclusive, transparent, equitable and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core, while keeping enough policy space for developing countries.

06

In August 2026, India's goods exports to the US rose over 21% year-on-year to $8.3 billion, while imports from the US rose 65.78% to $5.97 billion.

Group of Twenty (G20)

The G20 is a forum of the world's major economies. Its members meet every year to discuss the global economy, trade, finance, climate and development. It is not a treaty body and has no permanent office; its decisions are political promises, not binding law. The country holding the yearly presidency hosts the meetings and sets the agenda.

Connection to this news

The G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Milwaukee is part of the US presidency's calendar. India will use it to argue for a WTO-centred trading system and to hold side meetings with other trade ministers.

India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA)

The India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) is a trade deal being negotiated between India and the United States. Its aim is to cut tariffs (import taxes) and other barriers on goods traded between the two countries, and to widen cooperation in areas like technology and energy. The two sides are working first on an interim (first-stage) deal, with a fuller agreement to follow.

Connection to this news

The Minister's meeting with the USTR aims to finalise the interim deal under the February 2026 framework. The talks continue while the US tariff tools themselves keep changing.

Static topic 3 of 3 · International Relations

World Trade Organization (WTO)

The World Trade Organization, or WTO, is the only global body that makes and enforces rules for trade between countries. Its members agree on rules such as how high their import taxes can be and how they must treat each other's goods. When two members fight over trade, the WTO has a system to settle the dispute. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and has 166 members.

Connection to this news

At the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting, India plans to argue for a multilateral trading system "with the WTO at its core" and enough policy space for developing countries. This reflects India's long-standing view that global trade rules should be made by all members together, even as it negotiates bilateral deals like the one with the US.
