Eye on Indo-Pacific: India and Australia deepen ties across nuclear, maritime and mineral sectors
India and Australia finalised the administrative arrangement operationalising their 2014 Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, clearing the way for commercial supply of Australian uranium to fuel Indian nuclear power reactors.
The arrangement, concluded during bilateral talks in Melbourne, resolves nearly a decade of gridlock over auditing, tracking and reporting mechanisms required to move uranium safely into Indian reactors.
Beyond the nuclear track, the two countries agreed to expand cooperation on maritime security, defence logistics, and a Critical Minerals Corridor covering resources such as lithium and cobalt.
Additional outcomes included support for a temporary space-tracking terminal on Australia's Cocos (Keeling) Islands to assist Indian space missions, alongside continuing dialogue on counter-terrorism and investment.
India–Australia Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (2014)
India and Australia signed their bilateral Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement in September 2014, which entered into force in 2015. The agreement permitted the export of Australian uranium to India for civilian power generation, conditional on it being used exclusively for peaceful purposes and placed under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.
