IMF Backs India's New GDP Method; India Projected to Overtake Japan as Fourth-Largest Economy in 2027

What happened
01

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected that India will overtake Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy in 2027, with a nominal GDP (GDP measured in current US dollars) of about $4.52 trillion.

02

The IMF also endorsed India's revised GDP calculation method. The head of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department called the revision a "welcome development", said it is consistent with the IMF's own advice, including from its statistics department, and praised the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). He added that there is still room for further improvement.

03

India's new GDP series uses 2022-23 as the base year (replacing 2011-12). The endorsement came after debate over India's strong 7.8% growth in the April-June 2026 quarter, with some questioning the numbers. The Chief Economic Adviser explained that the new base year and method changes also revised the previous year's quarterly growth figures.

04

In its October 2026 World Economic Outlook, the IMF raised India's growth forecast for 2026 (India's fiscal year 2026-27) to 7%. Japan is projected to grow only 0.7%, held back by high energy costs, rising prices and an ageing population.

05

The IMF expects Japan to slip behind both India and the United Kingdom in world GDP rankings in 2027. The United States remains the largest economy, followed by China and Germany.

06

The IMF's Regional Economic Outlook for Asia and the Pacific noted that India's currency came under pressure after the global energy shock, that this pressure has partly eased, and that India was among the economies that intervened in foreign exchange markets.

Purchasing Power Parity (PPP): Nominal GDP vs PPP Rankings

Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a way of comparing the size of economies, or the living standards of people, after adjusting for the fact that the same money buys different amounts in different countries. A haircut, a plate of food or a bus ride costs much less in India than in the US. If we simply convert India's GDP into dollars at the market exchange rate, we undercount how much India actually produces. PPP corrects this by valuing every country's output at common prices. That is why India is the world's fourth or fifth largest economy in nominal terms, but the third largest in PPP terms.

Connection to this news

The IMF's projection that India will overtake Japan in 2027 is a ranking by nominal GDP, measured in US dollars at market exchange rates. On a PPP basis, India has already been the world's third-largest economy for years, well ahead of Japan, because prices in India are much lower. So the news is about India's growing weight in world markets, while India's PPP rank says more about the real volume of what it produces.

National Income Accounting and GDP Measurement

National income accounting is the system a country uses to measure the size of its economy and how it changes. Its most famous number is Gross Domestic Product (GDP): the total value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a year. Every few years, the base year of the GDP series is changed so that the numbers reflect the current structure of the economy, new data sources and better methods. In India, this work is done by the National Statistics Office (NSO) under MoSPI.

Connection to this news

The IMF's endorsement of the 2022-23 base year series matters because international comparisons, including the IMF's own rankings, use India's official GDP data. Because the revision changed the level of India's nominal GDP, it also feeds into dollar-based rankings such as the projection that India will pass Japan in 2027.

World Economic Outlook (WEO): The IMF's Flagship Forecast Report

The World Economic Outlook, or WEO, is the IMF's main report on how fast the world economy and each country's economy are likely to grow. It also gives forecasts for inflation, trade and other key numbers, and explains the main risks. It comes out in full twice a year, in April and October, with shorter updates in January and July. When newspapers say "IMF raises India's growth forecast", they are almost always quoting the WEO.

Connection to this news

The 7% growth forecast and the GDP projections behind the "India overtakes Japan" headline come from the October 2026 WEO and its database. The comments on India's currency and foreign exchange intervention come from the IMF's sister report, the Regional Economic Outlook for Asia and the Pacific.
