Monsoon deficit narrows sharply, but weak Kharif sowing remains a key risk: Report
India's cumulative southwest monsoon rainfall deficit narrowed sharply to 15% below normal, down from 38% a week earlier, following a week of rainfall running 45% above normal.
Despite the rainfall recovery, total Kharif sowing area remained about 20.8% lower year-on-year, with oilseeds (down 39.3%), cotton (22.9%), pulses (21.8%), coarse cereals (16.4%), and rice (13.1%) all trailing last year's pace; sugarcane was the only major crop showing a marginal increase (1.6%).
Live reservoir storage stood at 32.4% of total capacity, an improvement week-on-week, but still 36% lower than the same period last year, even though it remained 7.5% above the 10-year average.
The report cautioned that a delayed pickup in sowing carries downstream implications for Kharif output and food-price dynamics later in the crop year.
Long Period Average (LPA) and Monsoon Rainfall Classification
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) measures monsoon performance against the Long Period Average — the mean seasonal rainfall for the country computed over a multi-decadal reference period (currently 1971-2020, with an LPA value of about 87 cm). Rainfall is categorised based on percentage departure from this LPA.
