Informal Summits as a Diplomatic Track
Beyond the SR mechanism, India and China have periodically used "informal summits" between the top leaders — meetings without a fixed agenda or formal joint statement — to reset strategic-level dialogue, a track distinct from both the SR talks and multilateral-sideline meetings such as the one now planned at BRICS 2026.
- Wuhan Informal Summit (April 2018): first such informal summit, focused on stabilising ties after the 2017 Doklam standoff.
- Chennai (Mamallapuram) Informal Summit (October 2019): second informal summit, held in Tamil Nadu.
- No informal summit was held after 2019 amid the deterioration in ties following the 2020 Galwan clash; subsequent leader-level engagement has instead occurred on the margins of multilateral summits (e.g., Kazan, October 2024, on the sidelines of BRICS).
- The 2026 BRICS summit meeting, if it proceeds as expected, would be the first visit by China's President to Indian soil since the Chennai informal summit in 2019.
