Background and Air Defence Employment
Operation Sindoor was India's military response following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on 22 April 2025, which killed civilians.
- India conducted precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in early May 2025, followed by a period of cross-border military exchanges between India and Pakistan
- India's air-defence response combined multiple indigenous and imported systems, including the S-400, the indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile system, and the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) for networked air-defence coordination
- Multiple Pakistani aircraft and a large surveillance/AEW&C-type aircraft were reported destroyed during the operation, with earlier official statements citing engagement ranges of approximately 300 km before the annual report's more precise 314 km figure
- The operation is frequently referenced in defence analyses as a live demonstration of India's layered, multi-domain air-defence network
