Ethnic Identity, Territorial Claims, and Constitutional Provisions
Manipur's ethnic conflict is fundamentally a contest over land, identity, and representation. The demand by Meitei communities for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status (which triggered the May 2023 violence) intersects with older Kuki-Naga territorial disputes over hill tracts along the Ukhrul-Imphal corridor.
