Rural Job Demand Under VB-G RAM G Rises 25% in September: What the Numbers Show

What happened
01

Demand for work under the VB-G RAM G rural job guarantee scheme rose by 25.2% in September 2026 compared with August 2026.

02

About 15.6 million households (1.56 crore) asked for work in September, up from about 12.5 million in August.

03

The number of individual people who sought work rose to about 18.8 million from about 15.4 million in August.

04

VB-G RAM G came into force on 1 July 2026, replacing MGNREGA. It guarantees up to 125 days of paid unskilled manual work a year to every rural household that asks for it.

05

Demand for such work is closely watched as a sign of how much rural families need extra income. It usually rises when farm work and other jobs in villages are not enough.

Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar aur Ajeevika Mission, Gramin (VB-G RAM G) Act, 2025

The VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 is the law that guarantees paid work to rural families in India. Any rural household whose adult members are willing to do unskilled manual work can ask for work, and the government must give up to 125 days of it in a year. It replaced MGNREGA (2005), which guaranteed 100 days. Because it is a legal guarantee, the work is demand-driven: it is meant to rise when people need it and fall when other work is available.

Connection to this news

The September figures show that households are using the new guarantee more as it settles in, with 15.6 million households seeking work. Because the scheme is demand-driven, such month-on-month data is read as a signal of rural income needs, and it also shows how much money the Centre and states will need under the new cost-sharing pattern.

Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP)

The Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSPs) are a set of goals and guidelines in the Constitution that tell the government what kind of society it should work to build. They are found in Part IV of the Constitution, from Article 36 to Article 51. They ask the State to secure things like work, education, fair wages, health, equal justice and a clean environment for the people. But they are not enforceable in court: you cannot file a case to force the government to follow them. Still, the Constitution calls them "fundamental in the governance of the country".

Connection to this news

Article 41 asks the State to secure the right to work within its economic capacity. The VB-G RAM G Act turns this Directive Principle into a legal guarantee of 125 days of work for rural households. The rise in September demand to 15.6 million households shows how this constitutional goal works in practice, and how much it depends on the money the Centre and states can provide.

Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS)

A Centrally Sponsored Scheme is a programme that the Centre designs and part-funds, while the states carry it out and pay a share. The money comes as tied grants, which can only be spent on that scheme, mainly under Article 282 of the Constitution. Many big welfare programmes in health, education, housing, water and rural jobs run this way.

Connection to this news

A 25% jump in work demand in one month means more spending on wages and materials. Under the new CSS pattern, states now pay 40% of this cost (10% for North-Eastern and Himalayan states). So rising demand directly affects state budgets, which is a key debate around the new law.
