The Outer Space Treaty (formally, the "Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies") is the foundational instrument of international space law, opened for signature in 1967. India is a signatory and ratifying party. It establishes that outer space is the "province of all mankind," free for exploration by all states, and not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty.
