Prime Minister lauds ISRO for successful launch of GSLV-F17 carrying EOS-05
ISRO launched GSLV-F17 carrying the EOS-05 satellite from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, in the early hours of 4 September 2026, placing the spacecraft into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).
EOS-05 is described as India's first-ever imaging satellite operating from a geosynchronous-type orbit, distinct from ISRO's usual low-earth-orbit (LEO) or sun-synchronous Earth observation satellites.
The Union Government welcomed the launch as a milestone for India's space sector, highlighting the growing indigenous capability to build and fly high-orbit Earth observation payloads.
The satellite is intended to support near-continuous monitoring of the Indian landmass for applications such as disaster tracking, weather and cyclone monitoring, and agricultural assessment.
GSLV — India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle
GSLV is ISRO's launch vehicle designed to place heavier payloads (over ~2 tonnes) into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO), a task the lighter PSLV cannot perform. It uses a three-stage configuration: a solid-fuel first stage strap-on boosters, an Earth-storable liquid second stage, and a cryogenic upper stage (the indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage Project, CUSP) burning liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.
EOS-05 needed the extra lift and higher-orbit capability of GSLV (rather than PSLV) because it was placed into a Sub-GTO, an orbit type PSLV missions typically do not target for such payload class.
Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) series and Geosynchronous imaging
ISRO's EOS series consolidates naming for its Earth observation satellites (older RISAT/Cartosat names were folded into the EOS nomenclature from 2020 onward). Most Indian EO satellites fly in Sun-synchronous polar orbits (600-800 km altitude), passing over the same location at a fixed local time roughly once or twice a day. A geosynchronous-orbit imaging satellite, by contrast, can stay focused on the Indian subcontinent continuously, enabling near-real-time, high-frequency revisits rather than periodic passes.
