India mandates IST as common time reference; gives 180-day window for compliance

The Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, mandating Indian Standard Time (IST) as the single common time reference for legal, administrative, commercial and official purposes across the country.

The Rules will come into force 180 days after publication in the Official Gazette, giving government departments, businesses and institutions a transition window to align their systems.

The move is part of the broader "One Nation, One Time" initiative, which seeks a secure, uniform time-distribution network so that digital systems — banking, telecommunications, railways, power grids and computer networks — no longer depend on inconsistent or externally sourced time signals.

A demonstration network for disseminating IST using domestic infrastructure has already been commissioned, showing secure transmission of time signals between metrology and financial-sector nodes as a proof of concept.

Indian Standard Time (IST) — Origin and Definition

IST is computed from the meridian at 82°30′ East longitude, passing near Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh), adopted with effect from 1 January 1906 during the colonial period as a single time standard for the country, replacing the earlier separate Calcutta and Bombay time zones. Because 82.5° divided by 15° (the longitude covered by one hour) equals 5.5 hours, IST is fixed at UTC+5:30 — a single time zone despite India's roughly 68°7′E to 97°25′E longitudinal spread of nearly 30 degrees.
