Amaravati to get India’s first dedicated university for quantum tech, AI and other deep-tech fields
Andhra Pradesh has approved India's first university dedicated exclusively to quantum technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and other emerging deep-tech fields, to be set up in Amaravati.
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), a deemed university under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, will lead the institution, with the Union government funding it fully at an outlay of about Rs 730 crore for an 8.5-acre campus.
The university aims to train approximately 8,250 learners over five years through a mix of formal degree programs and non-formal skilling courses, with collaborations planned with institutions such as IIT Tirupati and IIIT Sri City.
Until the campus is built, programs will run from Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur; the initiative is positioned to align with national missions on quantum technology, AI, and semiconductors.
National Quantum Mission (NQM)
The National Quantum Mission is a Union government program to develop and scale up quantum technology research and applications in India, approved by the Union Cabinet in April 2023. It focuses on four thematic areas: quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices, and aims to build a national ecosystem spanning R&D, infrastructure, industry, and skilled manpower.

NIELIT and Deemed University Status
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) is an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), functioning as a deemed-to-be university, that conducts examinations, training, and skill-development programs in IT and electronics. "Deemed university" status, granted under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, allows an institution meeting a high standard of teaching and research to enjoy the academic status and privileges of a university without being one formally constituted by Parliament or a state legislature.
