Moon Base | India’s lunar future
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in its Moon Base programme, which aims to establish a permanent human outpost near the Moon's south pole.
The invitation was extended during the ninth India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group meeting held at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru in early August 2026.
The programme envisages incremental development through robotic cargo missions, technology demonstrations, and eventual crewed operations, with an initial operating capability targeted for the 2029-2032 phase and a semi-permanent crew presence envisaged from 2032 onward.
India's eligibility for the invitation rests on its 2023 Chandrayaan-3 landing near the lunar south pole and its 2023 signing of the Artemis Accords, alongside prior joint work such as the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite.
The lunar south pole is prioritised because its terrain includes near-permanent sunlit ridges (useful for solar power) and permanently shadowed craters believed to hold substantial water-ice deposits.
Artemis Accords
The Artemis Accords are a US-led, non-binding set of principles governing civil space exploration, first announced in October 2020, intended to establish norms for peaceful, transparent, and interoperable lunar and deep-space activity consistent with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. They cover issues such as registration of space objects, interoperability of systems, emergency assistance, release of scientific data, protection of heritage sites, and the extraction and use of space resources.

Chandrayaan-3, ISRO's third lunar mission, successfully soft-landed its Vikram lander near the Moon's south polar region on 23 August 2023, making India the first country to achieve a controlled landing in that specific area and the fourth nation overall (after the erstwhile USSR, the US, and China) to achieve any soft lunar landing. The south pole is scientifically significant because its permanently shadowed regions (craters whose floors never receive direct sunlight) are cold enough to have trapped water ice for billions of years, while nearby elevated terrain receives near-continuous sunlight, useful for solar power generation.

NISAR, launched in 2025, is the first satellite jointly built by NASA and ISRO, using dual-frequency (L-band and S-band) synthetic aperture radar to monitor changes in Earth's land and ice surfaces.
