Indian Railways expands Kavach 4.0 to 2,490 Route km on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes
Indian Railways has commissioned Kavach Version 4.0, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, across 2,490 route km on the high-density Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah trunk routes.
This is an expansion from the 1,452 route km commissioned on the same two corridors as of March 2026, reflecting accelerated rollout through mid-2026.
Sections covered include stretches such as Palwal–Mathura–Nagda, Vadodara–Ahmedabad, Vadodara–Virar on the Delhi–Mumbai route, and sections including Gaya–Sarmatanr and Chota Ambana–Bardhaman–Howrah on the Delhi–Howrah route.
Deployment has also involved laying over 8,500 km of optical fibre cable, installing over 1,100 telecom towers, setting up 767 station data centres, and fitting over 4,100 locomotives with onboard Kavach equipment.
Kavach implementation work is under progress on a further roughly 21,900–24,400 route km as part of the broader national rollout.
Kavach — India's Indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System
Kavach (earlier called the Train Collision Avoidance System, TCAS) is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system, developed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) with Indian vendors, designed to prevent train collisions caused by Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) events and to automatically enforce speed limits.
