ICMR hands over homegrown cervical pre-cancer treatment, vaccine technologies to pharma firms
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has licensed three indigenously developed biomedical technologies to Indian pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturers for further development, manufacturing, and commercialisation.
SHetA2, a first-in-class, non-surgical therapeutic candidate for treating Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN), a cervical pre-cancer condition, was licensed to Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
Two next-generation vaccine candidates against enteric bacterial infections — a next-generation typhoid vaccine candidate and a broader-protection candidate targeting Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, and Shigella — developed at ICMR's National Institute of Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI), Kolkata, were licensed to Biological E Ltd.
SHetA2 was co-developed by ICMR's National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (ICMR-NICPR) in collaboration with a US-based cancer research centre, reflecting an international research partnership behind the indigenous technology transfer.
The technology transfers are aimed at accelerating India's domestic capacity for affordable cervical pre-cancer treatment and next-generation enteric vaccines.
HPV, Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia, and Non-Surgical Pre-Cancer Treatment
Persistent infection with high-risk strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the established cause of virtually all cervical cancer cases. Before progressing to invasive cancer, HPV infection typically causes Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) — a graded, pre-cancerous change in cervical cells detectable through screening — which is currently treated using excisional or ablative procedures (such as LEEP or cryotherapy).
