India's Africa Outreach: A Three-Nation Tour of Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Ethiopia

What happened
01

India's External Affairs Minister made an official visit to Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Ethiopia from October 6 to 10, 2026. Ethiopia was the last stop; he reached its capital, Addis Ababa, on October 8.

02

The Ministry of External Affairs said the tour reflects India's commitment to a deeper partnership with Africa and to Global South solidarity (cooperation among developing countries).

03

In Ghana, talks with President John Dramani Mahama on October 6 focused on taking forward the India-Ghana Comprehensive Partnership, set up during the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Ghana in July 2025. Areas included trade, investment, infrastructure and development cooperation.

04

In Côte d'Ivoire, the minister addressed former trainees of India's ITEC programme (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation), calling development partnership the centre of India's engagement with Africa.

05

In Ethiopia, he held talks on the full range of ties under the Strategic Partnership that the two countries agreed in December 2025. He also chaired a conference of India's Heads of Mission (ambassadors) in the region.

06

The tour stressed shared aspirations and self-reliance: partnerships that build Africa's own skills and industries, and secure supplies of food, fuel and fertiliser. It came months after the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit, planned for New Delhi in May 2026, was postponed because of a public health situation in Africa.

India-Africa Relations: Strategic and Economic Dimensions

India-Africa relations are the political, economic, security and people-to-people ties between India and the 54 countries of Africa. They rest on a shared history of fighting colonial rule and racism, and on shared goals as developing countries. Today the partnership covers trade, investment, loans for projects, training, health, defence and cooperation at global forums like the United Nations and the G20. India calls its approach a development partnership: it tries to build Africa's own capacity rather than just give aid.

Connection to this news

The October 2026 tour of Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Ethiopia puts these pillars into action: development partnership (ITEC in Côte d'Ivoire), trade and investment (Ghana) and strategic ties (Ethiopia, home of the AU). It also keeps momentum going while IAFS-IV awaits new dates.

African Union (AU): Structure, Agenda 2063 and India's Partnership

The African Union (AU) is the organisation of all the countries of Africa, working together for peace, development and unity. It has 55 member states and its headquarters is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Think of it as Africa's version of a continental club, a little like the European Union, but with much less power over its members. The AU replaced an older body, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), in 2002.

Connection to this news

Ethiopia, the last stop of the tour, hosts the AU headquarters, which makes Addis Ababa India's key window to the whole continent. India's partnership with the AU, from co-hosting the India-Africa Forum Summit to winning the AU's G20 seat, is the backbone of the "shared aspirations" the tour highlighted.
