Russia explores rail link to India to bypass maritime chokepoints
A proposal has emerged to explore a railway route connecting Russia to the Indian Ocean through Central Asia and Iran, with possible extensions through Afghanistan and Pakistan toward India.
The route is being examined as an alternative to existing maritime shipping lanes that pass through the Bosphorus Strait and the Strait of Hormuz — both vulnerable to disruption.
The proposal comes amid expanding India-Russia energy trade, with Russian crude oil forming a large share of India's crude import basket in recent years.
The idea remains at a feasibility and discussion stage; no construction timeline or binding agreement has been announced.
International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)
The INSTC is a 7,200-km multimodal transport corridor (sea, rail, and road) linking India to Russia and Northern Europe via Iran, the Caspian Sea, and Central Asia. It was established through an agreement signed in St. Petersburg on 12 September 2000 by India, Iran, and Russia as founding members, and has since expanded to include Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus, Oman, and Syria, with Bulgaria as an observer.

Strait of Hormuz and Bosphorus Strait as Maritime Chokepoints
A "chokepoint" in maritime geography refers to a narrow passage that is critical to global shipping and vulnerable to blockade, congestion, or geopolitical disruption. The Strait of Hormuz (between Iran and Oman, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea) and the Bosphorus Strait (between Europe and Asia, controlled by Turkey, linking the Black Sea to the Mediterranean via the Sea of Marmara) are two of the world's most cited chokepoints.
