India, U.S. sign agreement for procurement of Javelin anti-tank missile system
The Indian Army signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) for procurement of the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missile system through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route.
The State Department had earlier approved the sale, valued at an estimated $45.7 million, covering 100 Javelin missile rounds, one fly-to-buy round, 25 Lightweight Command Launch Units, training aids, simulation rounds, spares, and lifecycle support.
The Javelin is currently in service with the US Army, US Marine Corps, and several international militaries.
Beyond this emergency purchase, India and the United States are negotiating co-production of the Javelin in India; Bharat Dynamics Limited signed an agreement with the Javelin Joint Venture (a Raytheon-Lockheed Martin partnership) to explore local manufacturing, and India submitted a formal co-production proposal.
The procurement follows a newly inked 10-year India-US defence framework aimed at deepening interoperability across land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace domains.
Foreign Military Sales (FMS) vs Direct Commercial Sale (DCS)
FMS is a US government-to-government arms transfer mechanism administered by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), under which the US government acts as an intermediary between the American defence manufacturer and the foreign buyer government.
