India's Water Crisis Is Becoming a Farm Crisis: Micro-Irrigation, Groundwater and Smarter Cropping

What happened
01

A recent expert analysis warned that India's water shortage is turning into a crisis for agriculture, which uses most of the country's fresh water.

02

It argued that farmers must change how they use water, with a focus on precision (giving each plant only the water it needs) and efficiency (wasting less water).

03

Suggested changes include drip and sprinkler irrigation, better scheduling of watering, and moving away from very water-hungry crops in water-short regions.

04

The analysis stressed that the willingness of farmers to change methods will decide whether water scarcity becomes a challenge India overcomes.

05

The concern matters because groundwater, the main source of irrigation in India, is being pumped out faster than rain can refill it in many blocks.

Micro-Irrigation: Drip vs Sprinkler and Water-Use Efficiency

Micro-irrigation means giving water to crops in small, controlled amounts, directly near the plant, instead of flooding the whole field. The two main types are drip irrigation, where water falls drop by drop at the plant's roots through pipes, and sprinkler irrigation, where water is sprayed over the crop like rain. Both use much less water than traditional flood irrigation and often give higher yields.

Connection to this news

The analysis says precision and efficiency will decide India's farm future. Micro-irrigation is the clearest tool for this: it lets farmers grow the same or more crop with far less water. Its spread, however, depends on cost, maintenance and the farmer's willingness to change.

Groundwater Depletion in India

Groundwater is the water stored underground in the cracks and pores of soil and rock, in layers called aquifers. Farmers and towns pull it up using wells and tube wells. Groundwater depletion means taking out more groundwater than rain and rivers can put back over time. When this happens year after year, the water table (the level below which the ground is full of water) keeps falling, and wells have to go deeper or run dry.

Connection to this news

The water crisis in farming is mostly a groundwater crisis, because irrigation takes about 87 per cent of the groundwater India pumps. The analysis calls on farmers to use water more precisely, which is exactly what is needed in over-exploited blocks where pumping already exceeds recharge.

Agricultural Diversification in India

Agricultural diversification means a farm or a country growing and earning from a wider mix of products instead of depending on one or two crops. It can mean growing pulses, millets, oilseeds, fruits or vegetables along with rice and wheat. It can also mean moving into dairy, poultry, fisheries or food processing. For water, diversification often means shifting from water-hungry crops to crops that need less water.

Connection to this news

The analysis asks farmers to do things differently, and changing what they grow is as important as changing how they water. Moving away from paddy and sugarcane in water-short regions would cut groundwater use far more than efficiency alone.

Key facts & data
  • Agriculture uses about 87% of the groundwater India extracts (2025 assessment)
  • National stage of groundwater extraction: about 60.6%; 730 assessment units over-exploited (2025)
  • India accounts for about 25% of global groundwater extraction
  • Drip irrigation efficiency about 80–90% vs about 35–40% for flood irrigation
  • Micro-irrigation potential: about 69.5 million hectares (Task Force estimate)
  • PDMC subsidy: 55% for small and marginal farmers, 45% for others
  • Over 115 lakh hectares under micro-irrigation through PDMC (as of July 2026)
  • Atal Bhujal Yojana: ₹6,000 crore, seven states, launched 25 December 2019
