New legless amphibian species discovered in village backyard in Western Ghats
Researchers have formally described a new species of legless amphibian, Gegeneophis chandgadi, from Buzawade village, Chandgad taluka, Kolhapur district, in the northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra
The first specimen was found in August 2025 in backyard leaf litter beneath a wooden pile by a local resident, and was subsequently studied by a multi-institutional team including the Zoological Survey of India
Identification combined morphological analysis (body ring counts) with DNA barcoding, distinguishing the species from its closest relatives in Goa and the Amboli plateau
The species was formally published in the Records of the Zoological Survey of India (September 2026) and is the seventh known species of the genus Gegeneophis from the northern Western Ghats

Caecilians (Order Gymnophiona) — India's Least-Known Amphibians
Caecilians belong to Gymnophiona, one of the three living orders of Class Amphibia — alongside Anura (frogs and toads) and Caudata/Urodela (salamanders and newts). They are limbless, burrowing (fossorial) amphibians with elongated, ringed (annulated) bodies, reduced eyes, and unique chemosensory tentacles between the eye and nostril used to sense prey underground. Their wormlike body plan means they are frequently mistaken for earthworms or snakes, and their subterranean habits make them one of the most under-surveyed vertebrate groups.

Western Ghats as a Global Biodiversity Hotspot
A "biodiversity hotspot," a concept introduced by ecologist Norman Myers (1988) and formalised by Conservation International, is a region holding at least 1,500 endemic vascular plant species that has also lost 70% or more of its original natural vegetation. The Western Ghats is one of 36 biodiversity hotspots recognised worldwide and is considered among the "hottest" of these for its exceptional endemism-to-area ratio. Separately, the Western Ghats was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012, comprising 39 component sites spread across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

IUCN Red List Categories and the "Data Deficient" Status
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the global standard for assessing extinction risk, sorting species into hierarchical categories: Extinct (EX), Extinct in the Wild (EW), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU) — the last three collectively termed "threatened" — followed by Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC), Data Deficient (DD), and Not Evaluated (NE). A species is classified Data Deficient when there is inadequate information on its distribution, population size, or trend to assess extinction risk directly or indirectly; DD is explicitly not a threat category, only an acknowledgement that more research is needed.

The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 is India's principal law for protecting wild fauna and flora. The Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022 (effective 1 April 2023) restructured the original six schedules into four: Schedule I (highest degree of protection), Schedule II (lesser degree of protection), Schedule III (protected plant species), and a new Schedule IV that reproduces CITES Appendices for species subject to international trade regulation. The amendment also removed the earlier separate schedule for "vermin" species.
