India’s protein demand set to triple by 2070: Emissions could soar, but the transition won’t look like West’s
A new report, "Charting India's Protein Transition," released by Asia Research & Engagement (ARE) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), projects that India's per-capita protein consumption will more than triple by 2070 — from about 9.5 kg to 30 kg annually.
The rise is attributed to rising incomes, urbanisation, population growth, and changing dietary preferences.
Under a business-as-usual (BAU) production scenario, annual emissions from India's protein system could reach 1.92 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent (GtCO2e) by 2070 — well above a climate-safe threshold of 0.25 Gt identified in the report.
The report finds India's protein transition will differ structurally from the West's: it is expected to be anchored in dairy and pulses rather than red meat, and built on a predominantly smallholder-operated dairy sector rather than industrial-scale livestock farming.
The report calls for a "just transition" — ensuring costs, re-skilling needs, and benefits of any production shift are distributed equitably among smallholders and small enterprises.
