Permafrost melt in the Arctic could cost $261 billion in infrastructure damages: Study
A new study projects that thawing permafrost across the Arctic could cause $261 billion in infrastructure damage by the mid-21st century (around 2050), more than double an earlier estimate of $110 billion.
The research, led by scientists at the University of Connecticut with collaborators from George Washington University and the Woodwell Climate Research Center, mapped buildings across Alaska, Canada, and Siberia in three dimensions rather than the two-dimensional footprints used in earlier assessments.
The study used a roughly 10-terabyte satellite imagery dataset, deep-learning models to identify and classify buildings, and elevation data to project ground subsidence as permafrost degrades.
Multi-storey Soviet-era apartment blocks in Siberia were identified as especially vulnerable, since their foundations depend on frozen ground for structural stability.
About 24% of the exposed land area studied lies within the Northern Hemisphere's permafrost zone; findings have been shared through a public data platform to support Arctic community adaptation planning.
What Is Permafrost, and Why Does It Matter for Climate Change?
Permafrost is ground (soil, rock, or sediment) that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. It underlies roughly a quarter of the exposed land in the Northern Hemisphere, mainly across Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and parts of the Tibetan Plateau/Himalaya at high altitude. Permafrost is significant for two distinct reasons tested by UPSC: (1) it acts as a structural foundation for infrastructure, and its thaw causes subsidence, cracking, and building failure; (2) it is a major carbon reservoir, storing nearly twice as much carbon as is currently in the atmosphere.

Though India has no permafrost of its own outside high-Himalayan zones, it maintains a formal Arctic research and policy presence, which UPSC has tested before via India's polar stations (Antarctica's Maitri/Bharati, and the Arctic's Himadri).
