Iran oil spill: The war is leaving environmental scars that ceasefires cannot heal
Oil slicks arising from the ongoing Iran-US conflict have reached the Hara mangrove forests near Qeshm Island on Iran's southern coast, in the Khuran Strait close to the Strait of Hormuz.
Multiple spill events have occurred through the conflict; Iranian authorities state the precise source of the current pollution has not yet been established and the extent of contamination is still being assessed.
Satellite observations show a marked rise in the frequency and extent of oil pollution across the Persian Gulf during the conflict period, with an earlier spill near Kharg Island also tracked drifting toward mangrove areas.
Affected ecosystems include mangrove forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and the fisheries and coastal communities that depend on them; mangroves are especially vulnerable because their dense root systems trap oil in sediment, making cleanup far harder than on open water.
