Clean energy push is India’s answer to transition challenges: UN climate chief
Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change (UNFCCC), during a visit to India, described the country as a "solar superpower" and praised its clean energy transition as an example for the world.
He noted that fossil-fuel-free (non-fossil) sources now account for roughly half of India's installed power generation capacity, a milestone reached about five years ahead of India's own Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target timeline.
Stiell highlighted that India's solar installed capacity has grown more than 50 times since 2014, and that India is currently the most cost-competitive large solar market globally, producing solar power more cheaply than any other major economy.
According to data cited from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India's renewable energy deployment saved approximately USD 18 billion in avoided fossil fuel purchases in the past year.
The remarks come as India works toward its stated national target of 500 GW of installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity by 2030, and as preparatory discussions continue ahead of the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP), where delivery on existing pledges is expected to be a central theme.
