PM GatiShakti at Five: Over 400 Infrastructure Projects Worth ₹20.23 Lakh Crore Recommended Through the Network Planning Group
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that over 400 infrastructure projects of different ministries, mainly roads and railways, worth about ₹20.23 lakh crore, have been recommended for approval under the PM GatiShakti initiative.
These projects were evaluated by the Network Planning Group (NPG), an inter-ministry group set up under PM GatiShakti. Every logistics and connectivity project costing more than ₹500 crore must be routed through the NPG before it goes for financial approval.
The update came as PM GatiShakti completed five years. It was launched on 13 October 2021.
The PM GatiShakti digital platform now brings together more than 1,800 data layers from 58 central ministries and departments and all 36 states and Union Territories. These include land records, ports, forests, schools, railway stations, water bodies, telecom towers and highways.
More than 65 software modules and tools and over 100 mobile and web applications have been built on or linked to the platform for data-driven planning.
PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan
The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP) is a digital, map-based platform that puts all of India's infrastructure plans on one screen. Before a new road, railway line or pipeline is designed, planners can see on the same map where forests, rivers, villages, other roads and power lines already exist. This helps different ministries plan together instead of separately, so projects avoid delays and logistics costs fall. "Gati Shakti" means "power of speed".
The ₹20.23 lakh crore figure is the total value of large projects that have passed through the NPG, the middle tier of the Gati Shakti framework. It shows the platform's main idea at work: big infrastructure is checked on a shared map, across ministries, before money is approved.
National Logistics Policy, 2022
The National Logistics Policy (NLP) is the government's plan to make moving goods across India cheaper, faster and more reliable. While PM Gati Shakti deals mostly with physical infrastructure (the "hardware"), the NLP deals with the "software" of logistics: processes, rules, digital systems, skills and standards. The two are designed to work together.
Faster appraisal of road and rail projects through PM GatiShakti directly serves the NLP's goal of cutting logistics costs. Well-planned, connected infrastructure is the base on which the NLP's digital and process reforms can lower the cost of moving goods.
