PM GatiShakti Turns Five: How a Digital Map Is Changing Infrastructure Planning

What happened
01

The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan completed five years on October 13, 2026. It was launched on October 13, 2021.

02

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the next phase will focus on multimodal connectivity (linking roads, railways, ports, waterways and airports into one smooth chain), faster project building and cheaper logistics.

03

As per government data, the platform now covers 58 Central Ministries and Departments and all 36 States and Union Territories.

04

As of October 12, 2026, the platform held more than 23,493 data layers (separate map layers such as roads, forests, power lines or land records). Its public version gives access to 230 approved datasets.

05

The plan has grown beyond national projects. It is now also used for planning at the state and district level and in social sectors such as schools and health centres.

PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan

The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan is a digital, map-based platform. It puts the infrastructure plans of many ministries and all states on one GIS (Geographic Information System, a computer map with many data layers) screen. This lets planners see roads, railways, ports, pipelines, forests and settlements together before they build anything. The aim is to stop departments from working in silos and to cut delays and costs.

Connection to this news

The five-year milestone shows how far the platform has spread: from a few infrastructure ministries to 58 Central bodies and all States and UTs. The stated next phase, multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency, is exactly what the "seven engines" and "six principles" were designed for.

National Logistics Policy, 2022

The National Logistics Policy (NLP) is the government's plan to make moving goods across India cheaper, faster and more reliable. PM Gati Shakti builds the physical "hardware" (roads, rail lines, ports). The NLP fixes the "software": rules, paperwork, digital systems, skills and standards. The two are designed to work together.

Connection to this news

The government says the next phase of GatiShakti will target "greater logistics efficiency". That is the shared goal of both plans: GatiShakti plans where the infrastructure goes, and the NLP makes goods move smoothly over it, so the cost of logistics falls.
