Structure, Functions, and India's Engagement
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the principal deliberative body of the United Nations, in which all 193 member states are represented equally (one vote each). Unlike the UN Security Council, UNGA resolutions are generally non-binding — but debates and voting records carry significant diplomatic weight.
- UNGA meets in regular sessions (September-December) and special/emergency sessions as required.
- The International Day to Combat Islamophobia was established by UNGA Resolution 76/254, adopted on March 15, 2022, sponsored by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
- India's right of reply at UNGA allows it to respond to statements made by other delegations — India regularly exercises this right against Pakistan on Kashmir and terrorism issues.
- India is not a UN Security Council permanent member (P5); it has served as an elected non-permanent member 8 times (most recently 2021-22) and is pursuing permanent membership as part of the G4 (with Germany, Japan, Brazil).
- UNGA's 4th Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) and 6th Committee (Legal) are venues where India regularly confronts Pakistani narratives.
