Scheme Design and Classification
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi was launched on 24 February 2019 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare as income support for landholding farmer families. It is classified as a Central Sector Scheme, meaning it is funded 100% by the Government of India — unlike a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, which requires a state government matching contribution. This distinction (Central Sector vs. Centrally Sponsored) is a recurring UPSC prelims theme across welfare schemes.
- Launch date: 24 February 2019; nodal ministry: Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
- Benefit: ₹6,000/year per eligible family, in three instalments of ₹2,000 (every four months) via DBT.
- Funding pattern: 100% Government of India funding (Central Sector Scheme).
- Eligibility: all landholding farmer families with cultivable land in their name, subject to exclusion criteria (income-tax payers, professionals, constitutional post-holders, and institutional landholders are excluded).
