India's Energy Security Exposure to the Strait of Hormuz
India imports a large share of its crude oil, LNG and LPG through the Strait of Hormuz, making disruptions here a direct national energy-security concern.
- The Strait accounted for roughly 41% of India's crude oil imports, 55% of its LNG imports, and 88% of its LPG imports in recent reporting periods, with the crude share rising to about 53% in some months as Gulf purchases increased.
- India's Strategic Petroleum Reserve has a capacity of 5.33 Million Metric Tonnes across three underground storage sites — Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Mangaluru and Padur (Karnataka) — providing about 9.5 days of crude cover, supplemented by Oil Marketing Companies' storage for a combined national cover of roughly 74 days.
- India has diversified crude sourcing (including increased Russian imports) in recent years partly to hedge against Gulf-corridor disruption risk.
