Statutory Basis and Mandate

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the apex regulatory body for food safety standards in the country, and front-of-pack labelling falls within its regulation-making power.

Key details

FSSAI was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which consolidated multiple earlier food laws (including the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954) into a single statute.
FSSAI was formally constituted in 2008 and became fully operational after its rules and key regulations were notified around 2011.
FSSAI functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is empowered to lay down science-based standards for food articles and regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import.
