Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC)
Dedicated Freight Corridors are exclusive railway lines built solely for freight trains, separating goods traffic from passenger traffic to allow longer, heavier, and faster freight trains without the scheduling conflicts of a shared network. They are implemented by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a special purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Railways.
- DFCCIL was incorporated in 2006 under the Ministry of Railways to implement the DFC project.
- The Eastern DFC runs approximately 1,337 km from Ludhiana (Punjab) to Sonnagar (Bihar), passing through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal; it was completed in 2023.
- The Western DFC runs approximately 1,506 km from Dadri (Uttar Pradesh) to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) near Mumbai, passing through Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra; it was completed with final sections dedicated on 8 September 2026.
- Combined estimated cost of the Eastern and Western DFCs is around ₹1.24 lakh crore (Eastern DFC alone costed roughly ₹51,000 crore).
