More brick structures, important features unearthed at Keeladi archaeological site in Tamil Nadu

Keeladi and the Revision of Sangam Age Chronology

The Sangam Age has traditionally been dated to roughly the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE, based on Tamil Sangam literature, Chera-Chola-Pandya dynastic references, and Roman coin finds. Scientific dating of deposits at Keeladi has pushed this chronology significantly earlier: the Archaeological Survey of India's own analysis of the first two excavation seasons placed cultural deposits between the 8th century BCE and the 3rd century CE, while the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology has stated that deposits can be safely dated to between the 6th century BCE and the 1st century CE — roughly 2,600 years old.

  • Six carbon samples from the fourth excavation season (2018) were sent for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) dating to Beta Analytic Lab, Miami, USA; a sample recovered from a depth of 353 cm was dated to approximately 580 BCE.

Institutional Framework for Archaeological Excavation in India
