UN General Assembly Resolutions
Legal Character
UNGA resolutions are generally recommendatory and non-binding on member states, in contrast to UN Security Council resolutions adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which can be binding. Resolutions like "Correct the Map" reflect political and normative consensus-building rather than enforceable international law, though they can influence state practice, education systems, and international organisations over time.
- UNGA resolutions require only a majority (or two-thirds for "important questions" under UN Charter Article 18) of member states present and voting; they do not need Security Council approval and carry no binding enforcement mechanism.
- The 164-1-6 vote pattern (near-unanimous with abstentions and a lone US vote against) is typical of symbolic/normative UNGA resolutions rather than security-related ones.
