Distinguishing Multilateral from Trilateral Frameworks
The OIC is the principal multilateral platform for cooperation among Muslim-majority states, distinct from ad hoc trilateral or bilateral defence pacts such as the MJDA.

- Has 57 member states, making it the second-largest inter-governmental organisation after the United Nations.
- India is not a member of the OIC, though it has had limited diplomatic engagement (e.g., an invitation to address the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in 2019).
