National Rail Plan – 2030
The National Rail Plan (NRP) is Indian Railways' long-term (2030, with a 2050 horizon) blueprint to build a "future-ready" railway system, released as a Vision document by the Ministry of Railways.
- Core target: raise the modal share of railways in freight traffic from roughly 27% to 45% by 2030 and sustain it, shifting freight away from road transport.
- Related targets: raise average freight train speed to around 50 km/h, achieve full electrification of Broad Gauge routes, and cut the logistics cost contribution of rail transport by roughly 30%.
- The Dedicated Freight Corridors are treated as foundational infrastructure for hitting the NRP's freight modal-share target, since they free up capacity on conventional lines currently shared with passenger traffic.
