India-Myanmar Border
Length, States and Terrain
The India-Myanmar border is one of India's most difficult-to-manage frontiers, running through hilly, forested, and largely unfenced terrain in the Northeast. It is often cited at approximately 1,643 km (some official figures use 1,624 km or 1,610 km for the fenceable stretch), making it longer than the India-Bhutan border and shorter than the India-Bangladesh border.
- Border touches four states: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram
- Runs from the tripoint with China in the north to the tripoint with Bangladesh in the south
- The border is largely unfenced and porous, historically managed through informal cross-border community ties given shared ethnic populations (e.g., Naga, Kuki-Chin-Mizo communities) straddling both sides
- Comparable to other Northeast frontiers: India-Bangladesh border (~4,096 km, most fenced), India-China LAC (~3,488 km, un-demarcated), India-Bhutan (~699 km, largely open)
