India-Japan CEPA (2011)

Structure and Coverage

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Japan was signed on 16 February 2011 and entered into force on 1 August 2011. It is a wide-ranging, 15-chapter agreement covering not just trade in goods but also services, movement of natural persons, investment, intellectual property and customs procedures.

India's third CEPA overall (after Singapore and South Korea) and its first comprehensive trade agreement with a developed economy
Envisages the elimination of tariffs on about 94% of traded items over a 10-year phase-in period from entry into force
Covers "movement of natural persons" provisions, an area of particular interest to India for services-sector market access
2026 marks 15 years since the agreement was signed, prompting the joint review
