AB PM-JAY, launched on 23 September 2018, is described as the world's largest government-funded health assurance scheme, providing a health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to over 12 crore poor and vulnerable families (roughly 55 crore beneficiaries), identified using the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011 database.
- Implemented and administered by the National Health Authority (NHA), the apex body for the scheme
- Offers cashless and paperless access at empanelled public and private hospitals, with no cap on family size or age, and covers pre-existing diseases from day one
- Funded jointly by the Centre and States in a defined cost-sharing ratio, as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS)
- Extended in September 2024 to cover all senior citizens aged 70 and above with an additional ₹5 lakh cover, irrespective of economic status
